A smile to defy the odds

September 2007: Peter Huntley recently helped one of his patients to win a national competition to find the most inspiring account of orthodontic treatment.

Joanne Haines, a part-time practice nurse and mother of three, entered this year’s Against the Odds competition organised by the British Orthodontics Society’s Orthodontic Specialists Group, to show her appreciation of the treatment she received.

On turning 40, Joanne decided it was time to improve the ungainly smile she’d lived with for years following a childhood injury and failed dental treatment. With a combination of lingual braces and Peter’s support, Joanne was given the smile she had always dreamt of.

Throughout her treatment, Joanne faced a series of traumatic events – a house fire that destroyed her home, her teenage daughter ran-away and her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumour. But despite this, Joanne stuck with her treatment and her braces were removed in time for her sister’s wedding, yet sadly only three months before her husband’s death.

Joanne explains:
“From the moment I met my specialist I felt empowered. Peter and his wonderful, caring staff made me feel good at each one of my six weekly visits, although they were unaware of my personal problems.”

“I cannot thank Peter enough for transforming my appearance and raising my confidence during this very difficult time.”
